Born on March 4, 1926, Robert celebrated his 100th birthday in 2026. His early exposure to art was shaped by a childhood immersed in impressionist works, fostered by his father, an avid art collector. This environment nurtured his creative curiosity from a young age.
Robert's formal introduction to global artistic traditions began in childhood at a progressive, co-educational boarding school, where the curriculum emphasized art from around the world. These formative experiences laid the foundation for a lifelong engagement with visual expression.
After college, Robert worked for a packaging company in New York City, a role that afforded extensive travel throughout the United States and abroad. During this period, he became deeply influenced by the abstract languages of Joan Miró and Wassily Kandinsky. Working exclusively in oil, his work reflects this influence through bold compositions and a dynamic, layered use of color.
In retirement, while living in San Diego, Robert's practice gained recognition from the curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, who encouraged him to exhibit in group shows. Ultimately, Robert chose a more personal approach, preferring his work to be placed directly with individual collectors rather than within group exhibitions.
Robert continues to paint today. At the core of his practice is a lifelong devotion to art, one that remains both his passion and his purpose.
"The power to remain oneself and ignore certain rules is not a phenomenon and has been my life credo. Each painting reflects my energy, passion, and sensibility: transferring consciousness of thought and moods, blending themes, imagination, and color, lending excitement and life to my work."— Robert Edward Ross
